POINCIANA – Two East Polk area locations are soon to be home to professional basketball teams.
The Florida Basketball Association, a minor league, will be adding franchises in Winter Haven and Poinciana. The teams will begin play in the spring.

“Most players are former college players,” League Commissioner Greg Kite said. “They’ve played anywhere from the NAIA level to (Division) I, DII, DIII and some internationally.”
Kite himself spent 12 seasons as a center in the NBA, winning a pair of championships with the Boston Celtics, who were led by Hall of Fame forward Larry Bird. Kite also spent four full seasons with the Orlando Magic and backed up Shaquille O’Neal for the 1993-94 campaign when the Magic reached the playoffs for the first time.

“I’ve always been involved in basketball at different levels,” Kite said. “I felt like I could balance this with my other businesses.”
